A single-screen IPTV plan is the plan most of our customers start with, and the question we answer most often about it is: “What happens if I log in on my phone while the TV is still on?” The short version is that one connection means one stream at a time, not one device for life. This article explains exactly how the limit is counted, what you will see when a second device tries to play, and the clean way to move from one device to another without locking yourself out.
How a single-screen IPTV plan counts connections
The server does not count installed apps or saved logins. It counts active streams: the moment a player starts receiving video, it occupies the connection. When the stream stops (you press back, close the app or the stream ends), the connection is released after a short grace period, usually well under a minute.
Consequences in practice:
- You can install the player on the TV, the phone, the tablet and a laptop, and keep your login saved on all of them. That is allowed and even recommended.
- Only one of them can be playing at a given moment.
- Browsing the channel list, the programme guide or the VOD catalogue does not use the connection. Only playback does.
- Our 2- to 5-screen plans on the pricing page raise this number; the mechanism stays the same.
What happens when you log in on two devices at once
Suppose the living-room TV is showing a channel and you open the same account on your phone. Depending on the player and the server policy, one of three things happens:
| Situation | What you see on the second device | What happens to the first device |
|---|---|---|
| Second device starts a channel | Spinning wheel, then a message such as “max connections reached”, “stream unavailable” or a stream that stops after a few seconds | Keeps playing |
| Second device starts a channel repeatedly | Same error each time | Can start to stutter, because every attempt is a new connection request |
| First device is closed properly | Channel starts normally after the grace period | Nothing, it is idle |
The important detail is that the first stream is never kicked off in favour of the second one. A single-screen plan protects the device already watching. If the phone cannot play, that is a sign the TV app is still streaming, even if the screen is off.
The hidden connection: apps that keep streaming in the background
Nine times out of ten, a “max connections” error on a single-screen account is not a second person; it is the same person’s other device, still streaming unnoticed. Typical cases:
- Smart TV switched off with the remote while the IPTV app was open: many TVs go to standby and keep the app and the stream alive for a few minutes.
- Android box left on a channel with the TV input changed to a games console.
- Phone app minimised rather than closed: some players keep buffering audio in the background.
- Laptop with a VLC or Kodi window left open on a channel in another virtual desktop.
- Reconnection loops after a Wi-Fi drop: the player retries the stream several times a second, and the server sees each retry as a new connection.
How to switch devices cleanly
Follow this order every time and you will never see the error:
- Stop playback on the current device. Press back until you are on the channel list, or press stop in the player. Do not just change the TV input.
- Close the app completely. On Android TV and Fire TV: Settings > Apps > the player > Force stop. On Samsung and LG, hold the Home or Back button and close the app from the recent list. On iPhone and Android phones, swipe the app away.
- Wait about thirty seconds. This covers the server grace period.
- Start the stream on the new device. If it still refuses, wait another minute, then try again; do not hammer the play button.
If you switch devices every day, for example TV in the evening and phone during the commute, it becomes a habit in a week. If it feels like a chore, a 2-screen plan removes the question entirely.
Changing devices permanently (new TV, new box, new phone)
With an Xtream Codes login (username, password, server URL), nothing needs to change on our side: type the same details in the player on the new device and remove the app from the old one. With an M3U link, same thing, paste the link. With a MAC-address app (IBO Player, Smart IPTV, Flix IPTV, some TV apps), the playlist is attached to the hardware address, so you must send us the new address and tell us which old address to detach. Our guide to M3U vs Xtream Codes vs MAC explains the three login methods if you are not sure which one you have.
Before you sell or give away the old device:
- Log out of the player and delete the playlist, not just the app.
- On a MAC-registered app, ask us to detach that address; otherwise the new owner could load your channels.
- If the device was shared with other people in the household, our article on privacy-first IPTV on shared devices lists the history and cache locations worth clearing.
Troubleshooting “max connections” when you are sure nothing else is playing
- Reboot the router: an unstable connection can leave a ghost session open server-side until it times out.
- Check the player’s settings for auto-start last channel or background playback and disable both on secondary devices.
- Look for a second copy of the playlist in the same app (some players allow several profiles with the same login, each opening its own stream when the EPG refreshes with stream previews).
- Turn off channel preview or picture-in-picture while browsing: previews count as playback.
- If the error persists after fifteen minutes with every device off, contact us with your username and the time of the attempts; we can see the active sessions and reset them.
A note on the optional adult package
The connection limit applies to the whole account, not per category. When the 18+ package is added, it sits in its own PIN-protected group and uses the same single stream. Nothing changes in the switching routine above, and the locked category never auto-plays, so it will not keep a background connection open by itself.
Single screen or more? Let us help you decide
If one stream at a time fits the way you watch, the monthly and 12-month single-screen plans on the pricing page are the cheapest way in. If two people in the house want to watch different things, write to us and we will move you to a multi-screen plan with the remaining time carried over.
