When your subscription arrives, it usually comes with more than one way to connect: a long M3U URL, a set of Xtream Codes credentials, and sometimes an invitation to send the MAC address of your device. Understanding M3U vs Xtream Codes vs MAC saves a lot of back-and-forth, because the three methods do not offer the same features, do not work in the same players, and do not fail in the same way. Here is what each one does under the hood, with a decision table at the end so you can pick the right method for every screen in the house.
M3U vs Xtream Codes vs MAC: what actually differs
All three methods lead to the same channels on the same server. The difference is how the player discovers the list and how much it knows about it.
| Method | What you receive | How the list is loaded | EPG | VOD and series | Catch-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M3U link | One URL (sometimes with a separate EPG URL) | Player downloads a text file listing every stream | Separate XMLTV file, must be added manually | Listed as flat entries, no posters or seasons | Rarely |
| Xtream Codes API | Server URL, username, password | Player queries the server category by category | Built in, automatic | Full: posters, descriptions, seasons, resume | Yes, when the channel supports it |
| MAC address | Nothing to type: the device identifies itself | Server pushes the playlist tied to the MAC | Depends on player | Depends on player | Depends on player |
M3U: the universal format
An M3U playlist is a plain text file. Each entry has a line starting with #EXTINF (channel name, logo, group) followed by the stream URL. Because it is just text, almost any video software can read it: VLC on a computer, Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client, GSE Smart IPTV, Smart IPTV on Samsung and LG, and of course the dedicated IPTV players.
Strengths: works everywhere, easy to inspect, can be edited to remove groups you do not want on a given device (useful for privacy on a shared TV). Weaknesses: the file can be several megabytes on a large service, so loading is slow on weak boxes; the EPG must be linked separately; VOD appears as a long list without metadata; and if the provider changes something, you must reload the whole file.
Where M3U is the right choice: computers, Kodi, Smart IPTV on TVs that have no other player, and any app that simply does not support Xtream Codes.
Xtream Codes API: the method most players prefer
With Xtream Codes, the player talks to the server through an API. It asks for the category list, then only the channels of the category you open, which makes the app faster and the memory footprint smaller. The server also returns the programme guide, movie posters, series seasons and the catch-up archive when a channel offers it. Resume positions and favourites are handled cleanly.
Players that support it: IPTV Smarters Pro, Smarters Player Lite, TiviMate, IBO Player (in addition to MAC), XCIPTV, GSE Smart IPTV, and Kodi through add-ons. Login requires three fields: Server URL (including http:// and the port), Username, Password.
Common mistakes: typing https instead of http, forgetting the port, adding a trailing slash or a space after the password when pasting from a message. If the app says Invalid credentials while the M3U link of the same line works, the problem is almost always one of those four.
MAC address activation: convenient, but tied to the hardware
Some players (IBO Player, IBO Player Pro, Smart IPTV, and set-top boxes in the MAG family) identify themselves with the MAC address of the device. You send us that address, often with a device key shown on screen, and the playlist is attached to it on the server. Nothing to type on the TV, which is a relief on a remote with no keyboard.
The drawbacks are real. The playlist follows the hardware, not you: if the TV is replaced, the activation must be moved, and some players charge a one-off fee per device. If the device’s MAC is spoofed or the player app is reinstalled on a different system, the link breaks. Finally, activation can take a little time on our side because it is a manual step. For a single TV that will not change for years, it is very comfortable; for a phone or a laptop, it makes little sense.
Which method for which device
| Device | Recommended method | Player | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android TV / Google TV box | Xtream Codes | TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro | Full EPG, VOD, catch-up, fast loading |
| Fire TV Stick | Xtream Codes | IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate | Same as above |
| Samsung / LG Smart TV | MAC address, or M3U | IBO Player, Smart IPTV | No keyboard; store players use MAC or M3U |
| iPhone / iPad / Apple TV | Xtream Codes | Smarters Player Lite, IBO Player | Store apps support the API |
| Windows / macOS | Xtream Codes, fallback M3U | IPTV Smarters Pro desktop, VLC | VLC only reads M3U |
| Kodi | M3U + XMLTV | PVR IPTV Simple Client | Native format of the add-on |
| MAG box | MAC address (portal URL) | Built-in portal | Only method supported |
Can you use several methods at once?
On a single-screen plan, the three methods are three doors into the same room: only one stream can be open at a time, whichever door you used. You can keep the M3U in VLC on the laptop and Xtream Codes on the box, as long as you do not play both simultaneously. If two people need to watch at the same time, that is a multi-screen plan, not a login question; the pricing page explains the single-screen options we offer.
Converting between methods
Xtream Codes credentials and the M3U link of the same line contain the same information. The M3U URL is built from the server, username and password, which is why the two always go together. The MAC activation, however, is separate: it must be requested through the contact page with the address shown in the player (format AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF) and the device key when one is displayed.
Quick troubleshooting by method
- M3U loads but the list is empty: the file was cut during download; reload on a better connection, or switch to Xtream Codes.
- Xtream Codes: server unreachable: wrong port or https; check the welcome message character by character.
- MAC: playlist not found: the address sent does not match the one on screen (Wi-Fi and Ethernet have different MACs on many TVs). Send the one displayed inside the player.
- Everything works except EPG: on M3U, add the XMLTV URL; on Xtream Codes, force an EPG update in the player settings.
